I’m Going to be Moving This Month

Heya folks!

This shouldn’t disrupt stuff too much on Arcadia Pod, but I will be moving a lot this upcoming month – I will *attempt* to keep posting as much as I have been if you enjoy my ramblings, but be prepared for some “shorter” articles while my free time slips away each weekend. With any luck, my new house will mean that I can start creating some different content for everyone, including a revamp of my audio podcast and maybe some videos. Stay Tuned!

While I’m still trying to rebuild this humble page after year(s) of neglect, I did notice some good news:

  • I just got 1,000 likes recently!
  • I also passed 500,000 pageviews!
  • and finally, I now have 500 followers!

Thank you all for reading this hacky website when there are so many more out there. I really appreciate it.

A Regeneration is coming, 2017 is the year of rebirth

Anyone that may still check on this blog may have noticed that some changes have been happening behind the scenes. I have purchased a new web domain, re-tooled the logo, and altered things like the Facebook page – but what does that mean? I plan to alter this blog ever so slightly in 2017, instead of having a handful of small one-topic blogs that I have been neglecting, I plan to merge them together into a new entertainment site -arcadiapod.com. not only will I discuss science fiction, but it will not only be UK-based sci-fi. I will discuss movies, TV, books, wrestling etc. Pretty much whatever I want. This will help with creativity and not lead to burn-out. Once I move, I will also be re-vamping my short-lived podcast so get ready for that as well.

Can’t wait to share some great stuff with you guys!

2014 in review – it’s been a great year!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog. I’ve been mostly absent from my blogging duties due to the holidays and a crunch at work, but I’ll be back soon. Maybe even this week if you’re lucky!

Here’s an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 250,000 times in 2014. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 11 days for that many people to see it.

Milestone Time!

300000 PAGEVIEWS Here’s to 300,000 more!

2013 Was a Great Year for This Site!!

My 2013 was generally bad on a personal level, seeing that I had a car accident and some other crappy stuff, but 2014 is looking up!! I’d like to thank each and every one of my readers (all ten of them!) for making ‘An American View’ have a solid year already! Last summer the site hit 100,000 page views, followed by two of my best months EVER in November and December. That was amazing considering the entire first year of this site’s existence raked in a whopping 1,000 views and very little attention. I’ve slowly been making a few bucks with Word Ads, and have had time to *attempt* a sister site and dabble in podcasting a bit. Hopefully I’ll have some surprises up my sleeve this year, and you guys will keep motivating me to keep writing bad reviews of stuff nobody cares about 😛

anyhow, the reason why I called you here is that I just checked my stats to find out that ….

The Dragon’s Loyalty Award

Every once in a while, one of these nice blog awards rolls through the entire “blogosphere” and gives many of us an excuse to personally thank other bloggers that we enjoy reading and/or inspire us in some way. Earlier this week I was awarded “The Dragon’s Loyalty Award” by a fellow blogger named Gene’O, from the blog Sourcerer. I wish to thank Gene’O, and hope others will check his blog out! These aren’t real “awards” as some people think about them, in that they do not have a panel that chooses a winner and there is no prize. These are more like a recognition meme of sorts – a way for bloggers to look back and thank their online buddies.

The award itself has simple rules:

  • Link to the blog that awarded you
  • Post 7 things about yourself
  • Nominate 7 other blogs for the award

So here we go, I guess I’ll post seven random things about myself since I rarely talk about myself on here.

1) Ever since I graduated, I’ve become one of those people that, for whatever reason, tries to stay busy all the time. Aside from blogging, I work full time, help on a buddy’s podcast, and take college classes through EDX. This has led to me getting “burnt out” every once in a while. I try to reign it in the best that I can.

2) I used to be really into metal music in High School, and still enjoy it but not exclusively like then. As I’ve aged, my tastes actually broadened and I listen to incredibly heavy stuff like Norwegian Black Metal mixed with poppy sounds of 80’s post punk and new wave. I shudder to think of someone that accidentally stumbles into my iTunes account.

3) For the fist ten years of my “adult life” (I’m 31 now), I never got my driver’s license. In fact I only started driving when I turned 27, and it was because I got a job pretty far from my house. My wife and I try to live frugally, so retail work did not support the idea of owning a car.

4) I’m a “cat guy” because I’m fairly scared of dogs to a degree. When I was four years old I was mauled by the family dog, and as one would assume – I simply don’t trust them anymore. I have kept cats ever since then, and people joke around that “I’m a crazy cat lady”, even though I’m not a lady of any sort…lol

5) I used to be REALLY into Japanese anime, so much that I was once the president of the local anime club. although I’m not into what many newer fans are into, I almost enjoy anime sci-fi better than British sci-fi.

6) I’m not a sports guy at all. Although, I’m a HUGE fan of professional wrestling. despite me knowing exactly how fake it is, much to the dismay of non-fans that non-politely try to remind me of the fact. I just like the athleticism, stories, and matches more than “real sports”.

7) I have a handlebar mustache that I have gone as far as to purchase mustache wax to maintain.

And now, here are a few blogs to check out (my nominees):

  • In My Not So Humble Opinion – I posted about how much I enjoy Ben’s blog before. If you enjoy comics and other nerd topics, check it out!
  • Ruminations and Observations – Belle runs an interesting blog that combines photography, history lessons, and even Doctor Who. It’s great!
  • CK Ponderings – A great photography blog usually focusing on places in and around the UK. His 365 days and 500 days series are always interesting to see.
  • The *Nixed Report – One of my friends, Thomas, runs a Unix/pop culture site that I sometimes appear on the Podcast for.
  • Is My Geek Showing – Another site that occasionally posts Doctor Who stuff plus a multitude of other topics.
  • No Chic, Just Geek – Awix posts stuff that is leagues above what I write about. His posts are very detailed and almost scholarly in many regards.
  • Here’s You a Blog – The blog of Lisa Bonnice, writer, podcaster, and talk show host!

Well that’s it for today! I hope everyone has a great holiday Next week!!

My Experience With WordPress’s Word Ads Service

English: The logo of the blogging software Wor...

I signed up for WordPress.com‘s relatively new advertising service, Word Ads, quite a while ago and it has finally paid off. When I checked my Paypal balance today, I had over $100 waiting for me, paid out by WordPress themselves. This made me punch the air in happiness, as I’m a one guy operation, and have a full-time job, so it’s not like this blog is something I can devote my life to. For those that do not know, Word Ads only pays after you hit a threshold of over $100, so this was for one year of having these ads sponsored by them. One would assume it’s not worth your time, if it took me that long, but that’s not really the case. The truth is that it was my fault that I wasn’t getting great payouts at first.

For like six months, I was stubborn and did not optimize my blog with a theme that really utilized the service. In fact, this led to me getting measly $2.00 per month payouts. I’d occasionally check my ad placement, and discovered a terrible ad that was like “get your Missouri Driver’s license” was my main sponsor. After I spent a “crapload” of time making my site look better and switched themes, I got better ads and as a result have been getting around $20 a month for the last few months. I’ve seen big stuff like World of Warcraft and even Walmart pop up. If I can maintain this trajectory, I might be able to really make some cash for my blog. I’m not expecting anything huge, but if I can make my bills less of an issue and make overtime a non-issue at work, I’d be so happy. And me being happy = more blog posts!

I’m writing this because a quick Google search for “tips for Word Ads” results in many cranky users that expected to become overnight millionaires with the service. So far, persistence has paid off for me, and I’m enjoying the ride. This is an unsolicited Word Ads minor success story, if you have any questions, or concerns feel free to consult WordPress.com’s Word Ads page here, or drop me comment, my experience might be helpful I suppose.

Here’s Some Other Stuff I’m Working On

I have a lot of diverse hobbies that do not fit into the topic of UK science fiction, and as such I have dabbled with a sister blog to this one. I recently started up “Classic Anime Blog” for your old school anime needs. If you like anime, and especially the more obscure stuff, feel free to drop a like!

I also have RSS feeds from this, the podcast I do, and my work for WWE’s JBL on the sidebar, check those out as well!

Thanks for letting me get my commercial out of the way, and stay tuned for more sci-fi goodness!

It’s Party Time!

Excuse the Ads Please

You guys may have noticed that I have started placing Amazon Ads on this blog once I learned that WordPress allowed it. I will make sure that they never get too obtrusive, and will try to keep them out of the way, like a link at the bottom of a review. I started using these and WordAds to HOPEFULLY be able to monetize this blog. I have no delusions that this small overly-specialized bit of the internet will ever make me money, but I am placing ads to hopefully be able to upgrade it. I want to do a podcast or even videos, but lack the funds to do so. Please let me know if they get obtrusive or inappropriate as I have no control over the WordAds stuff, and thanks for your patience!

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 36,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 8 Film Festivals

  • Thank the person who gave you this award. That’s common courtesy.

A big shout out goes to Fran, she runs a pretty slick blog about all things British including pop culture, food, fashion, etc. called “Musings of an Anglophile“. If you want a good site to read, she keeps it updated pretty often. Thank you very much for the nod to my humble site, and I’m happy for my blog to be on your radar!

What Do You Want Me to Talk About Next?

I Hate My Internet Provider Sometimes

Internet was out all weekend apparently, I posted some stuff to go up for the weekend, but was unable to get anything up yesterday or today for that matter….GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Upcoming Reviews

Here is some content I plan for the next few months!

Hyperdrive – ongoing – just finished season 1, season 2 is also on streaming.

Day of the Triffids – Same as Hyperdrive…I just need to write something for a few eps.

Big Finish audio plays – I have a large number of Big Finish audio plays that I obtained in bulk, so I am going through all of them in order.  I actually started listening to them around six months ago, hence the “quick review” format.  Once I get caught up to a point where I am writing about them 100% fresh, I will do longer reviews.

A for Andromeda – The remake from 2005-ish.  I have always wanted to see the original A for Andromeda I love to see early TV sci-fi, but alas it suffered the same fate as a lot of other old TV shows, and a lot of it does not exist.

The Quatermass Project – This is the live re-make that David Tennant was in just prior to his run in Doctor Who.  I’ve had this on my computer forever (seriously like 4 years!) and have yet to watch it!

Tripods – These will be the books, I eventually want to get the show, but I’d like to read the books first.

I have more that I plan on doing, but this is my plate for now!

I updated my “about” page, and thought this would be a fitting re-introduction to the site :p

So why, you might be asking, have I decided to blog about British science fiction of all things?  Most people blog about pets, children, work and other mundane things; this is what I used to do way back when I had a Livejournal account.  I would jump on and let the rage fly about whatever thing made me angry that day.  After writing this way for so long, a person realizes that such a blog seems not only bitter, but rather much like an Andy Rooney tribute site.  I decided to change to something a bit more specialized as it would not only entice readers to come back and see what’s new, but help me find like-minded friends.  I ultimately chose to blog about British science fiction.

I was born in the eighties, and enjoyed spending my young years watching Doctor Who with my mother on our local PBS station.  Right away I noticed that it was different than what I was used to (Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers) and that made it really special.  In fact, my love of the local PBS station at the time meant I was blessed with many UK television shows repackaged as educational programming including Erasmus Microman and many others.  From this early age I grew to love this kind of TV, and now it is one of my favorite hobbies.

I got back into UK sci-fi in 2004 in the time leading up to the re-launch of Doctor Who.  Since then I have tried to watch as much classic and modern UK sci-fi TV shows that I can, and would like to share my views on it.  Whether it be reviews, opinion, funny stuff…whatever, I’ll try to post it.  It may seems as if I concentrate on Doctor Who quite a bit on here, but that’s merely because it is both my favorite program and the sheer quantity of material out there for it.  When possible I will post about other stuff.

Enjoy the site, and don’t forget to send me some comments!

I’m Posting every day in 2011!

I’ve decided I want to blog more. Rather than just thinking about doing it, I’m starting right now.  I will be posting on this blog once a day / once a week for all of 2011.  I’m actually posting this a few days into my goal, but aside from January 1st, I’ve hit the goal!

Rather than use the blog topics submitted by the fine folks over at Word Press, I will continue this blog as normal as posts about puppies and my favorite ice cream have absolutely nothing to do with British Science Fiction 😛

Here’s to hoping that I don’t stop in three months…LOL!
