Kansas City Area Weekly Local Wrestling Roundup 4 – Week of 7-13-24 – New Breed Wrestling Edition

As I mentioned before, I was too busy during the Independence Day weekend to keep up with blogging, so I have put together a series of “catch-up” editions of my Weekly Local Wrestling Roundup. All the companies I keep up with dropped a whole lot of videos to YouTube, which is awesome, but I was somewhat caught off guard by just how behind I was! This particular article is a summary of four episodes of New Breed Wrestling Squared Circle alongside a synopsis of what went down as well as some pics that I capped from the footage and links to the videos themselves. These episodes roll nicely into the recent NBW show I attended live this past weekend, which is something I will review shortly.

For More about New Breed Wrestling, check out their Facebook Page HERE, their Twitter (or I guess X) page HERE, or YouTube HERENBW is also on Cagematch, HERE, although it appears to be slightly out of date.

(Perhaps that’s something I can look into helping with)

Kansas City Area Weekly Local Wrestling Roundup 4 – Week of 7-13-24 – New Breed Wrestling Edition

NBW Squared Circle – Season 3 Episode 11 – “It’s Always Sunny in Macon” From Macon, MO

The Card:

  • “Nothin’ Neater” Derek Teter w/ “Money” Mike Pettis address the crowd, Teter did not realize Pettis had signed contract in his name
  • Slammer and Burt Cameron w/ Bert Candy Defeated The O’Neal Brothers (Devin and Steven)
  • FTG – Frodo the Ghost (C) Defeated “Wrestling’s Finest” Blaire Dior to retain the NBW TV Title

My Thoughts:

The first match for this episode is a follow up to the previous edition of this series, and is more of the recent show from earlier in the Summer from Macon, MO featuring a huge strap I quit match as the main event. This is a few matches into that show, and is between Slammer and Burt Cameron (and Bert Candy) versus The O’Neal Brothers. Right off the bat, I couldn’t help but notice just how much of a hype man Slammer is, leading the crowd in chants of “O’Neals Drool” when they tried to get the similar chant of “O’Neals Rule!” off the ground. Slammer, however, had to sit out for a while as Burt Cameron was first up. The O’Neal’s are both large men, but Burt Cameron is a big boy himself and deceptively agile for his size. For a large portion of this match, Cameron took both O’Neal’s to task, making it look as if they were going to be steamrolled.

Eventually, the tide turned and The O’Neals seemed too much for Slammer, who was hit with some underhanded tactics, thus keeping the match under O’Neal control for quite a while. Even when Cameron was finally tagged in the second time, he was cut off with a huge running lariat that killed his momentum dead. Perhaps due to his experience or just sheer willpower, Cameron was finally able to block a series of what could have been finishing moves and dropped Steven O’Neal with a spinebuster worthy of the legendary enforcer himself. Slammer finally gets back in, hits his big boot, nails a bodyslam, and finally a leg drop to win the match. Despite the loss, “Money Mike Pettis” comforted the O’Neals and offered them spots in his stable System of Brutality ($.O.B.). It looks like he’s been needing some henchmen, and the O’Neals definitely fit the bill.

The Next Match was a TV title defense between FTG – Frodo the Ghost and “Wrestling’s Finest” Blaire Dior. FTG has been holding onto this belt for a while and seems to be doing pretty well fending off all comers to his tiny bit of prestige. He is ever the opportunist and slimy like a snake, meaning that Blaire Dior had a hell of a time keeping him from countering everything he tried, and twisting it into his own attacks. The reason he is so effective is that FTG has a lower center of gravity than some of his foes, and is quite robust, making speedy quick attacks that have quite a bit of power behind them. When you have guys like Dior, that are somewhat taller, a wider reach can be outclassed by being slammed into like a wrecking ball, which is what happened here a lot.

One of the more interesting things about this match, was that the latter half of it was watched very intently by none other than “The Natural” Atlas Armstrong. This mirrors something from last week’s show, when FTG watched him wrestle The Iceman. These two seem destined to clash. Atlas has made it VERY clear he is gunning for that belt, even discussing it in a recent interview I conducted, where he replied “Still the NBW Television Championship!” as to what one of his short term goals was. Eventually Blaire went for a high-risk top rope move and FTG dodged it, signaling the end for Blaire’s title attempt.

NBW Squared Circle – Season 3 Episode 12 – “Strapped In” From Macon, MO

The Card:

I Quit Strap Match – “The Silverback” Big Joe Helms (w/ Lady Gun and “The American Outlaw” Tyler Bodine) Defeated “Nothin’ Neater” Derek Teter (C) (w/ “Money” Mike Pettis and the O’Neal Brothers) For the New Breed Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.

My Thoughts:

This is it, the match that NBW Squared Circle has been building up to for weeks, the final confrontation between “Nothin’ Neater” Derek Teter and “The Silverback” Big Joe Helms for the New Breed Wrestling Heavyweight Championship. As NBW Owner Scotty Z stated on a previous episode, this match is not a traditional strap match where one has to hit all four corners to win, rather it is an “I Quit” match with the added oomph of a strap to basically ramp of the brutality of the match. Still sour from not actually agreeing to the match, Teter seemed to initially be determined to not actually compete, damn near walking out of the arena. He finally relented and allowed himself to be tethered to his foe. What followed was a real clash of titans and Teter and Helms are both large guys and every crash to the ring send reverberations through the building. Everything went back and forth, until chaos started creeping in from the numerous tag-alongs outside of the ring. Eventually it got so bad that Mike Pettis and Lady Gun got ejected from the match.

Devin O’Neal had been wearing a towel around his neck throughout the match, and in a scuffle he attempted to use it as a weapon, appearing to the referee that he was throwing in the towel to stop the match. The match was called and the NBW heavyweight Championship belt was presented to Helms. One problem I can definitely see here is: neither man actually said “I Quit”, so it really depends on how that contract was written or I can foresee trouble in the future. To add insult to injury, Teter’s “Vanity Belt” emblazoned with “The Neatest Heavyweight Championship”, was nonchalantly handed off to a child in the audience! In the aftermath, discussions began about what a rematch might look like, with the possibility of a cage match mentioned! I can’t wait!

NBW Squared Circle – Season 3 Episode 13 – Everybody Loves Candy

This episode was a nearly one-hour interview with “Mr. One Night Stand” Bert Candy conducted by NBW Commentator Sal Sanchez including some of his favorite matches he’s been in. The matches included:

  • Bert Candy and Slammer Defeated Ateu and Shipwreck
  • “Dirty Deeds” Daniel Maxon (w/ “Money” Mike Pettis) Defeats Bert Candy – Hair VS hair Match

NBW Squared Circle – Season 3 Episode 14 – “Fields of TV Title Dreams” From Macks Creek, MO

The Card:

  • “The Natural” Atlas Armstrong defeats Burt Cameron
  • FTG – Frodo the Ghost (C) Defeated Shipwreck to retain the NBW TV Title

My Thoughts:

This episode was from a show in Macks Creek, Missouri at what appears to be a little league baseball tournament of some sort. As a result, there were a ton of children in the crowd, and it seemed like people were coming and going as with many “festival shows”. These sorts of crowds are generally great, and I often tell people how funny it is to watch kids absolutely lo0se their minds when bad things are going down at a wrestling show. First up was a match between two recent favorites of mine, Burt Cameron and “The Natural” Atlas Armstrong. Burt Cameron definitely had size advantage over Atlas, and things like whipping Atlas into corner, continual stomping, and gigantic hip-tosses seemed absolutely brutal on him for this very reason.

The kids in the crowd were not into his domination, and as a result somewhat turned on Cameron, eventually one could hear a bunch of boos! It would appear that Atlas is “a natural” fan favorite, see what I did there?! At one point, Atlas almost got the win with his signature cutter that usually signifies the end of the match, but Cameron was too close to ropes. Instead, Cameron hit a spear and a corkscrew suplex, which also resulted in a near fall, but no cigar. Finally, Atlas finally went to the top and nailed a high cross-body for the win! Both men held each other’s hands high to show great sportsmanship – something I’m sure a bunch of little league players could benefit from.

The main event for this hour of wrestling action was FTG (aka Frodo the Ghost) issuing an open challenge to everyone at the ballpark, but not before making a total ass of himself yelling at a bunch of children. FTG spent the better part of five minutes demanding respect from children in the crowd like he was an unfortunate substitute teacher having a bad day. Eventually, everyone noticed that everyone’s favorite drunken sailor, Shipwreck, appeared to be attempting to buy rum snow cones nearby and wandered over in the commotion. The match was set and it would be FTG versus Shipwreck for the championship.

For those unfamiliar with Shipwreck, he is largely drunk at all times owed to the jug of rum he carries with him. One would assume that would make any match against him easy, but as with the legendary drunken masters of yore can attest, have no inhibitions, feeling no pain, and lacking in emotions can help lend a fierce fighting ability that befuddles and confuses one’s opponent. Shipwreck could just be one of New Breed Wrestling‘s hardest men to beat for this very reason. Like Popeye and Spinach, Shipwreck tried to get to his rum to regain his power numerous times, but FTG dumped it out. There was plenty of shenanigans like Shipwreck spanking FTG’s butt, tumbling from the ropes, and even trying to tag-out the referee which I’m sure infuriated FTG as he takes himself VERY seriously. Eventually Frodo was able to dodge some of the nonsense, and get a win, clinging to that belt for at least one more show.
